I see Father's Day is coming up, and I've twisted the editor's arm to allow me a couple of graphs on personal privilege. My dad passed away 23 years ago.
Heck, he was only five years older than I am now.
And, as each year has passed since then, I've discovered more and more things I wish I'd asked my father about before he died. I'd like to have his take on things
of today... and I'd really love to be able to tell him he was so right, as so many fathers are, on so many things we just didn't understand in
our more spirited and youthful days. Wouldn't it be great just to be able to say, "A-ha. NOW I see what you meant."
Dan Fogelberg summed it up pretty well in 'The Leader of the Band', a tribute to his father, when he wrote,
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
and pop, I don't think I said
"I love you" near enough...
So, if you happen to be fortunate enough to still have your dad nearby ... maybe even this coming weekend, and in the weeks and months that follow ... please
don't wait until it's too late to pick his brain on everything under the sun. Just trust me on this one.
