I'm sure I'm getting in trouble here, but I've never been accused of keeping my mouth shut on something I'm thinking ... so let's fasten the seat belts and put it
in 'four-wheel' ...
About my Dixie Chicks ... I say upfront, before God, Chet Atkins, and Bill Gates (who is hiding right inside YOUR very computer screen), that what the lead singer
of the Dixie Chicks said in front of a live audience of Brits in London was ... well ... mistimed, inappropriate, and very ill-advised. People pay money to see the Chicks
sing, play fiddle and banjo, and generally entertain. Period. Having said that up front, may it please the Court.....
I, along with millions of other Red Blooded Americans (and don't you dare deny it) am a HARD CORE BIG TIME NO QUESTIONS ASKED FAN of 'the Chicks' ... From the days
of their back-bar appearances in Dallas when I was producing Southwest Conference Football ... to now, winning Grammy after Grammy with great on-stage schtick. And
I still am, even after what was unfortunately said.
What'd she say? . . . . . . . What'd she say???
Ya' ever said something that, even before it's outta' your mouth, you wish you hadn't. And, if you happened to be on the world or national stage, your statement
might stick to you like "gum in the Walmart parking lot", forever. "...I'm In Charge!!" --- "I didn't have sexual relations with that woman..." --- "Barney's a commie
pinko, Sugar." --- "No New Taxes." --- or, "We're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."
That's what Natalie Maines said. She apologized, but it'll be in her campfire for a long, long time. Quite honestly, it's not the first time anyone
has heard someone say something like that. It just wasn't on a sold-out London stage, for cryin' out loud. Anti-American sentiment is strong in Europe right now. I
know about that, first-hand. And the statement may have been defensive in nature, but that's still no excuse.
However, I'm sticking with mah Chicks. No CD-burning parties here. Nope. Got the Chicks' latest offering on right now - some song about an 18 year old kid going off
to some war in Viet Nam. That one'll stick in a lot of campfires for a long, long time, too.
