WHY THE HECK, TAMPA ???

OK. I promised myself a couple of months ago that I wouldn't discuss the pros and cons of the possibility of war in the Gulf in this little dispatch ... and so in keeping my word, I won't. It's not that I don't have very concrete feelings on the issue ... I most definitely do. It's just that there are a whole host of folks much more qualified to render an opinion, than I. However, I DO dare to touch ... only touch, mind you, on a related topic: Why in the hell is this potential war being run from ... of all places ... TAMPA, FLORIDA ??!!

We all saw news accounts this past week of troops and planes and guns and ships and Lord knows what else being sent to massive staging areas in the Persian Gulf region - Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and even Turkey - to await possible "marching orders" from Washington ... by way of ... TAMPA!

Tampa! Home of Super Bowls, Final Fours, some of the greatest fishing in the Gulf of Mexico (well, at least it's near some gulf), and, yes ... home of the United States Central Command, and its commander, General Tommy Franks. What's wrong with this picture? I can see it in Washington. But, TAMPA?

The Presentation ...

Can't you just hear the marketing presentation, now?

"...now Mister President, we've heard from Cairo ... Kuwait City ... and Bahrain ... and for our final presentation, here are the representatives from ... TAMPA."

Run a war during duty hours, and catch the Devil Rays under the lights. Ahhh, combat zone pay and hardball - what a country, eh? Enough!

Seriously ... to all those going over toward harm's way, Good Luck, Godspeed, and Thanks!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK, EVERYONE...
